I recently wrote a story concerning the possibility of moving over to Mac and I wrote my reasons as to why and I’ll come back to that later on as as to whether I did stick with it by with that. Windows eleven has just launched and as I’ve used Windows ever since I can remember, and likewise been in the Insider Preview program since its start I needed to give my sincere assessment on the latest release from Microsoft.
You will note each a thumbs up and a thumbs down on this so bear with me.
Let's start with the Thumbs Up stuff first!
New Settings has had an enormous overhaul from its predecessor. The Settings page has been static for a while now and has looked just about the identical since Windows 8.1. Microsoft have been continually adding more and more from the Management Panel over into Settings to the point the place it was (excuse the language) a cluster fuck. A lot of people out there still use Windows 7, hell even Windows XP so when you’re one of those people approaching to Windows 10 you would find it difficult at instances to navigate Settings. Windows eleven has massively changed this and made the UX of Settings a complete lot better.
As you can see from the image above, everything has now been simplified into a most important menu and then sub menus quite than a touchdown page that you simply noticed on Windows 10. They’ve added some iconography to the principle menu with some nice colour, a nice change from the static theme colour menu you had in 10. The Settings app in Windows 11 now feels more intuitive for the consumer finish user.
Up next is Personalisation. The Windows group have added some nice Themes to select from and the ability to create your own. These themes look really, really nice with the new glassy really feel to the OS. When using the Settings app for example, you will see the color of the deskhigh background bleed by slightly. It’s not overpowering either and goes a stable black (or white if using the light theme) when that window shouldn't be active. I feel like Microsoft are trying to make Windows personal again. Windows 10, at launch, was nice but over the 6 years or so it received very dated. The only customisation you had really was what color accent you wanted. I can see more and more Windows 11 type themes being added over time and I’m all for it.
Following on from Personalisation is the new Taskbar. Like the Settings app, this has had an enormous overhaul which I think goes to divide super customers and your run of the mill users. It’s been simplified for the lots, and I will talk about the good stuff first. This part may even be listed within the thumbs down part later on. Microsoft have made a bold change right here and centred the Start Menu. It does take some getting used to but after a few days use, muscle memory kicks in and it’s now not a thing. Not to point out, in case you don’t like it you can simply move it back within Settings. The Start, Search, Task view, Widgets and Chat buttons are nicely animated when clicked and it’s subtle little things like this that make the OS really feel fresh. The bottom proper nook has additionally changed. Clicking the time will now only fly out a Calendar and any Notifications you've got, and Quick Settings is now accessed by clicking the group of icons subsequent to the date and time.
While you click the Start Menu now you get 3 sections. The primary is the Search perform, the second is the pinned apps part and lastly, beneficial where you get a list of not too long ago installed apps and recent files. Tiles have been removed totally and instead a cleaner menu is provided. Clicking All apps takes you to the app list of old the place you can pin apps to the menu etc. Apps could be shuffled round by clicking and holding then moving them to the place you need them. Clicking in the Search box automatically shifts you over to the dedicated Search function on the Taskbar. Search seems to have had a massive backend overhaul too. I’m finding (no pun meant) that I can find my files and apps loads higher than in previous. I keep in mind in Windows 10 typing out the complete app name and getting a web search end result instead of the installed app so this is a huge improvement!
